Axius, an innovative stern drive control system developed by Mercury Marine, will debut at the Southampton International Boat Show.

Fitted to the award-winning Sealine SC29 sports cruiser, Axius provides unparalleled manoeuvrability and significantly improved performance for stern drive boats. The joystick system of Axius dramatically simplifies boat driving, including mooring. Axius allows a novice boat driver to operate and even dock a boat with virtually the same ease as an experienced boater.

Axius was developed by the MerCruiser division of Mercury Marine and employs SmartCraft Joystick Docking technology. The Axius control system is based on technology originally developed for the Zeus pod propulsion system by Cummins MerCruiser Diesel (a joint venture between Mercury MerCruiser and Cummins).

Axius offers astonishing precision control through the use of independently articulating Bravo Three drives. Joystick control allows the driver to “walk” the boat laterally, turn, move forward or in reverse, or spin on its axis. Axius can take advantage of variable-assisted power steering, providing a smooth lock-to-lock turning response. An optional autopilot system offers a simplified hands-free operation.

Since Axius doesn’t require modifications to the hull, it’s an easy upgrade to a MerCruiser SeaCore® Sterndrive with features including hardcoat anodizing, closed cooling and an increased use of stainless steel making it perfect for saltwater environments.

Axius will initially be available in conjunction with Mercury 5.0 litre MPI petrol engines for boat deliveries in January 2008. It will also be available with CMD’s 2.8 litre diesel engines for delivery in the second quarter of 2008.
